During the discussions, the parties explored key areas of bilateral cooperation in ecology, environmental protection and sustainable development.
Particular attention was paid to the implementation of the Intergovernmental Agreement on Environmental Cooperation signed in January 2024 during the state visit of the President of Uzbekistan to China. The importance of a strong, long-term partnership and the expansion of joint scientific and practical initiatives were emphasized. Among these initiatives are projects for establishing halophyte plant gardens in the Arnasay, Karmana, Mubarek, Karakul and Nukus districts, the transfer of 1.4 tons of halophyte seeds to Uzbekistan’s Forestry Agency, the introduction of digital pollution monitoring systems, and the involvement of Chinese specialists in implementing the national “Yashil Makon” (Green Space) initiative.
The meeting culminated in the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between the Ministry of ecology, environmental protection and climate change of the Republic of Uzbekistan and the Xinjiang Institute of Ecology and Geography, Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS XIEG). The document was signed by Minister Aziz Abdukhakimov and Professor Zhang Yuanming, Director General of CAS XIEG.
According to the memorandum, the parties agreed to establish the Research Center for Ecology and Environment of Central Asia (Tashkent Headquarter), which will be located at the Central Asian University of Environmental and Climate Change Studies – “Green University”. The center will serve as a regional platform for joint scientific research, capacity building, knowledge and technology exchange and the promotion of green and sustainable development across Central Asia.
The memorandum outlines a wide range of areas for cooperation, including joint research and development, scientific conferences and workshops, publication of collaborative studies, laboratory modernization, implementation of applied environmental projects and the training of highly qualified specialists.
The signing of the memorandum marks a significant step toward deepening environmental cooperation between Uzbekistan and China and advancing joint efforts to address global climate challenges while strengthening regional partnerships.
